Take a day trip from your apartment at Albany Lofts at One Broadway in Menands, New York to Lake Placid, New York during any season for some fun – or make it a weekend getaway trip. Lake Placid is just over 2 hours away from your apartment in Menands. Take I-787 northbound. Take Exit 9W for the merge onto NY 7 westbound. Then, take the exit for I-87 toward Saratoga Springs and Glens Falls. You’ll be on I-87 for 98.6 miles. Take Exit 30 and then turn left on US 9. Then, take a left on NY 73 westbound into Lake Placid. Once you get to Lake Placid, you’ll find tons of things to do.
Probably most famous for Whiteface Mountain, the 1980 Hockey Game USA vs. Russia (Miracle on Ice) and the Olympic Ski Jump Complex, there is actually even more to Lake Placid that is so worth exploring! This picturesque town is the perfect getaway for so many reasons!
Enjoy all of the beauty that the Adirondacks have to offer by visiting Mirror Lake for some great views and photo ops. Plus you’ll be able to relax after the drive, if you are staying for more than a day.
If you want to fit a hike in the day trip, or if you are making a weekend out of this day trip, be sure to hike up Mt. Jo. The round trip is 2.6 miles. The “short” trail is only about 2/10 mile shorter, but is considerably steeper and may be more enjoyable for those who are looking for a challenge.
No matter what the season is, you’ll enjoy visiting John Brown Farm State Historic Site. Amenities include interpretive signs, self-guided tours and scenic views. Activities include guided tours, group tours, hiking, a picnic area, the historic house, cross country skiing and re-reenactments.
If you are looking for an easy trail for a family hike, visit Brewster Peninsula Nature Trails. Pick up the trail head near the center of the village at the sign-in center. You’ll also be able to pick up maps of the trails. You’ll even get some views of Lake Placid from the trails, and that would make the perfect backdrop for a family photo.
The area also has a lot of shopping – and these are locally-owned shops – and dining opportunities. You’ll find antique shops, music stores, farmers’ markets, health stores, kids’ stores, specialty gourmet food and gift shops, wine and spirits, florists, greenhouses, shoes and accessories, jewelry stores, sporting goods stores and more. Be sure to stop by the glassblowing shop for unique gifts and Bear Essentials for authentic and original apparel from the area.
