Posted in Albany, New York, Events, Family Friendly

One of the great advantages of making the Albany Lofts at One Broadway your home, is the variety of things to do in the surrounding area, including many hot spots within walking distance of your apartment in Albany. When weather permits, a stroll through the neighborhood to one of these local institutions is a great way to spend an afternoon or evening.

Here are five nearby, sure-fire places to spend time (and money), without having to even drive:

1. Sky Zone Trampoline Park
(50 Simmons Lane; 518-417-3838)
Have an overabundance of energy? Winter cabin fever getting you down? Love bouncing around like a circus performer? Well then, you’ll be happy to know that Sky Zone Trampoline Park is just a short stroll from the Albany Lofts at One Broadway. Key attractions include: Foam Zone, where you can fly or flip into a pool of huge foam squares; Freestyle Jump, which lets you grab air on Sky Zone’s sprawling wall-to-wall trampoline courts; SkySlam, a jumping slam-dunk activity featuring basketball hoops of different heights for jumpers of all sizes; Ultimate Dodgeball, which reinvents the game on a walled trampoline court; and SkyLadder, which challenges you to scramble up a shifting rope ladder and plant a flag. Save some energy, though, for the walk home!

2. Johnnie’s On Broadway
(1278 Broadway, 518-434-5752)
A local favorite for pub food, adult beverages, music and dancing, Johnnie’s on Broadway is a 4-minute walk from your apartment at the Albany Lofts at One Broadway. (And hey, it’s always a good idea to walk to the bar, rather than drive.) Soul food is the specialty here, so don’t miss out on a chance to enjoy favorites like chicken and waffles, pulled pork, grilled pork chops or shrimp and grits, served with mouth-watering sides like mac n’ cheese, collard greens and rice with gravy. Check the events calendar on the bar’s Facebook page for upcoming special happenings.

3. Wolfert’s Roost Country Club
(120 Van Rensselaer Boulevard, 518-449-3223)
When you make your home at the Albany Lofts at One Broadway, you also enjoy the convenience of having a world-class golf course, country club and tennis facility less than a mile from your door. Founded in 1915 on the estate of the late David B. Hill, the former governor of New York, this historic hangout offers a range of family sporting activities as well as fine dining. Multiple membership options are available, including packages for residents and non-residents, corporate and social memberships. But please, don’t drive the golf carts back to your apartment.

Druthers Brewing

4. Druthers Brewing Company
(1053 Broadway, 518-650-7996)
Brewpub aficionados will need to look no further than Druthers for their hops-induced cravings. This fine establishment features a tasty selection of its own craft brews year-round, including its popular Golden Rule Pilsner, Fist of Karma Brown, Against the Grain Hefeweizen, All-In IPA and The Dare (Gose), plus seasonal selections when available. But don’t stop there; check out the joint’s excellent gastropub fare, specially paired with its beer selection, including its Beer Cheese Dip, Loaded Mac & Cheese, burgers, bowls and wood-fired pizzas. The owners are fond of the Seneca quote, “You Are Your Choices,” and you will find it difficult, yet rewarding, choosing between the many frosty beverages and tempting eats. Luckily, failure isn’t really an option here.

5. Huck Finn’s Playland
(25 Erie Blvd., 518-242-7575)
Old-fashioned amusement parks for kids are sadly a dying breed, so it’s pretty fantastic that Huck Finn’s Playland—a local favorite since 1951—is just up the road from the Albany Lofts at One Broadway. It is now located on the grounds of the Huck Finn furniture facility, which saved the former Latham park from closure in 2015, moving the attractions to the new site. Take the kids for a classic afternoon of fun on 17 different rides, including the Scrambler, Paratrooper, Balloon Flight, 4×4 Trucks, Boats, Helicopter, Merry Go Round and more. It is also available for parties. The park is open from noon to 9 p.m., May 26 through September 2.
