Yes, winters in Upstate NY are cold, snowy and sometimes long, but rather than hibernate, why not embrace the weather this time of year? Here are just a few of our favorite activities and things to do near our Albany apartments this winter.
Albany Chef’s Food & Wine Festival
Attend the northeast’s premier culinary event January 17-19, 2019 at the Empire State Plaza. The Albany Chef’s Food & Wine Festival is a 3-day event to raise money for the arts, and a great opportunity to support downtown restaurants and art galleries. Enjoy top-of-the-line food and wine pairings, and learn about the impressive art of food and wine preparation with cooking demonstrations and wine tasting seminars. Ticket prices vary.
Red Maple Presented by the Capital Repertory Theater
From Friday, January 25 to Sunday, February 17, 2019, the Capital Repertory Theatre will present the world premiere of Red Maple, a hilarious comedy set in the suburbs of Albany. Written by Capital Region actor and playwright David Bunce, Red Maple is the story of Robert, a usually dependable professor who seems to fall apart upon becoming an empty nester. At a dinner party among friends, Robert makes a startling announcement and “things get shaken and stirred as the cocktails and confessions begin to flow.”
Empire Skate Plaza
Located near Albany’s State Capitol, the popular Empire State Plaza Ice Rink is open daily through March 10, 2019 from noon to 8pm (closed daily for maintenance between 3:30 and 4:30 pm). Skating is free and skate rentals are just $3 for kids age 12 and under and $4 for adults. New this year, every Saturday is “FREE Skate Rental Day” courtesy of Hannaford Supermarkets. Other amenities include refreshments, lockers and learn-to-skate clinics.
Downhill Skiing & Snowboarding
For downhill skiing and snowboarding near Albany, visit Maple Ski Ridge in Schenectady NY. Offering weekday, weekend and half day lift tickets, as well as season passes, lessons and daily or seasonal ski and snowboard rentals, Maple Ridge is a great mountain for skiers and riders of all ages and abilities, but it’s truly ideal for beginners. Located just 20 miles northwest of Albany, Maple Ridge is an official Burton “Learn to Ride Center”.
Snowshoeing & Cross-Country Skiing
Several New York State Parks near Albany offer snowshoe and cross-country ski trails, and the Albany Pine Bush Preserve has nearly 20 miles of marked multi-use trails for snowshoeing, cross-country skiing and hiking. If you’re looking for a cross-country ski center, Pineridge Cross Country Ski Area is just 30 minutes from Albany and offers lessons, ski rentals, guided tours, a warming lodge and a retail shop. They even have 2.5 miles of lighted trails for Nordic night skiing. For snowshoe and cross-country ski rentals, check out Eastern Mountain Sports in Albany.
