Location, Location, Location
Location could be all five reasons you’ll love living in Albany. 3 hours from Boston, NYC, the Finger Lakes, and even Montreal, Canada, Albany is perfectly located for exploring the North East. Within the greater Capital Region, the Albany area also boasts nationally-known horse racing at Saratoga and easy access to the historic Hudson Valley (with its bountiful vineyards, orchards and antiquing trails). Music and the Performing Arts at the Egg, Proctors, and SPAC
For a relatively small area an easy train or car ride from the bigger markets in NYC or Boston, the Capital Region gets a lot of big-name musicians. The Egg, renowned for its incredible acoustics, is home to events boasting names from alternative rock hero Ben Folds to classical pianist George Winston. Proctors in Schenectady hosts national tours of Broadway shows and SPAC a few minutes away in Saratoga Springs has played summer host to the New York City Ballet and Philadelphia Orchestra for fifty years (in addition to hosting national tours featuring artists like Dave Matthews Band and Miranda Lambert).
You’re Living in an Outdoorsman’s Paradise
Ok, so we mentioned location as number 1, but seriously – location! Albany is smack in the middle of the Catskills and the Adirondacks. With hundreds of lakes, rivers, and creeks to tempt you with kayaking and standup paddle boarding during the summer months and the High Peaks to get you hiking in the fall or on the slopes over the winter months, Albany is an outdoor wonderland for anyone who likes to spend some quality time with nature. Whether you’re just easing into hiking with the easy trails at Saratoga Spa State Park or conquering all 5,344 ft of Mt Marcy, the Capital Region is your gateway to the outdoors.
Excellent Cost of Living
Everyone knows that NYC is one of the most expensive markets in the world, but even we were surprised that cost of living in Albany is a whopping 50% less overall than in NYC. Housing in Albany is actually just below the average for the United States, which means you get a lot more for a whole lot less.
The Four Seasons
Upstate NY is gorgeous year-round, provided of course that you adjust your definition of gorgeous to match the current season! With excellent skiing and snowboarding in winter, beautiful tulips in Washington Park for the spring Tulip Festival, summers filled with water sports on area lakes, and the famed New England fall foliage, what’s not to love about Albany and the Capital Region?
