If you’d rather not break your budget, you can still have a great Valentine’s Day at home, in your apartment in Albany. Make your own decorations or pick up some Valentine’s Day décor at a discount store. If you have children, this is a great time to get them involved with making holiday decorations that you can save for years to remember the fun you had.
Using cheap construction paper, cut out hearts of different sizes. String a line of them from one side of the room to the other. You could also make 3-D hearts. Cut out 20 to 30 hearts of the same size. Using a stencil for this ensures that you get the same size. Fold all of the hearts in half so that you have half a heart. Along the folded line, punch two holes in the same place on each heart: One near the top and one closer to the bottom. Stack all of the hearts together. Using thread, yarn or thin rope, tie the hearts together. Unfold them all and arrange them evenly in a circle. If you want to hang it, pull a 10-inch piece of string through the top hole and knot the ends to make a hanger.
Add a bouquet of roses or your loved one’s favorite flowers to the décor. Use the bouquet as a centerpiece for the table. Surround the vase with rose petals, bowls of Valentine’s Day candies, or more homemade decorations.
Decorate a doorway or fireplace mantel with a string of red or pink lights. If you can’t find pink lights, use a string of all-red Christmas lights. Weave a string of red or white lights along the string of hearts you have hanging across the room.
Create your loved one’s or your family’s favorite dinner, but add to it. Instead of making a one-course meal, create a multi-course meal such as you would get in a restaurant. Start off with a salad with generous toppings, a favorite appetizer, the main meal and then dessert.
For the main course, if you don’t really have a favorite, choose a meal that you don’t make often, or even try something new. Find your favorite restaurant’s copycat recipes online. You’ll be surprised at how easy some of those complicated-tasting dishes are to make.
For dessert, you might make a heart-shaped cake, a red Jello dessert, pudding with whipped cream and Valentine’s Day confections on top, or strawberry cheesecake. If the cheesecake sounds like the perfect ending to the perfect meal, but you’re not that great at making cheesecake, you can find plenty of no-bake cheesecake recipes online. These are most always never-fail recipes.
Choose the appropriate wines to match each course. For children, to make it special, serve soft cider, soda or a drink they’re not usually allowed to have with a meal.
