In the Capital Region, spring transforms into summer in a humid hurry. At Albany Lofts at One Broadway, our residents beat the heat by taking advantage of our on-site amenities and following these easy tips.
Enjoy the Pool – The outdoor pool at Albany Lofts is open all summer, 7 days a week from 9:00 am to 9:00 pm. There are plenty of lounge chairs and umbrella-shaded tables that make it easy to work on your tan. Residents can access the pool using their key fob and guests are welcome.
Shut the Blinds – Keeping the blinds closed and filtering direct sunlight out of the living space can lower the temperature by up to 20 degrees. Closing the blinds essentially prevents your apartment from becoming a sauna, which is a real possibility if you have east and west-facing windows.
Set the AC Properly – Set the AC to around 72 degrees and 78 degrees when you aren’t home for peak efficiency. This should create a balance between a comfortable temperature and a power bill that doesn’t skyrocket through the summer months.
Everyone Likes Ice Cream – Visit the old standby Ben & Jerry’s on Madison Avenue or head out Delaware Avenue to Emack and Bolios for some outrageous ice cream combos. A short drive up Central Avenue brings you to Kurver Kreme — arguably the best soft-serve ice cream in New York.
Create Some Air Flow – Close the door to rooms that aren’t used much, but keep the ones to your bedroom and main living space open. This way cool air goes where it’s needed most. The 16-foot vaulted ceilings and hardwood floors at Albany Lofts not only look great, but they also promote comfortable temperatures and excellent air circulation.
Give the Oven a Break – The last thing you need on a hot summer day is the oven raising the temperature in your apartment. Use a crockpot or instant pot to cook or just make a salad. An even better option is to go out to eat at one of the nearby restaurants and pubs where the AC is sure to be running cold.
Change Your Sheets – The heavier sheets that kept you warm all winter don’t do you any favors in July. Switch them out for cotton or bamboo sheets that are lighter and breathe better. Buckwheat pillows can also help keep you cool because they don’t hold on to your body heat like conventional pillows.
Check the Ceiling Fans – Turn on the ceiling fan and make sure it’s rotating counter-clockwise. Sometimes they are set to run clockwise during the winter months to circulate warm air — you definitely don’t want that. If it is turning the wrong way, there’s a small switch on the outside of the fan’s base that will change the direction.
Open Windows at Night – During the peak of the summer heat, nights don’t offer too much relief. But as temperatures moderate, take advantage of cooler nights by opening up some windows. The apartments at Albany Loft’s have lots of large, easy to open windows that can create a nice breeze through your living space.
